Project for Tsunami Disaster Relief South Thailand
By all 6 Rotary Clubs located in Phuket Province

Abstract and Reason:
As of the Title Wave disaster of 6 provinces in the South of Thailand which are located on the Andaman Sea which are the Provinces of Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Ranong, Trang and Satoon on the 26th of December 2004 had the effect of terrible loss of life and property which never happened before. The estimates are a loss in Thailand of not less then 8,000 life's and more then 10,000 people hurt. Properties damages in the amount of many 10,000 Million Baht whereas the loss of life around the world is over 300,000 lives. All Rotary Club in Thailand, each district in Thailand and around the world send their condolences and worries and started to send funds, materials and volunteers for relief projects to the 6 provinces in the way of passing it to local the Rotary Clubs of the 6 provinces starting from the first day of the disaster. Both PDG of the district 3330 from the Rotary Club of Phuket and Tongkha and the Assistant District Governors of Zone 6 and 7 of District 3330 opened a bank account on the 27th of December 2004 in order for Rotarians and districts in Thailand and abroad can send funds for Disaster Relief. Therefore in order to manage funds donated and orderly relief as of objectives of Rotary to be reached by the needed the project of South Thailand Disaster Relief had been started by all 6 Rotary Clubs of the province of Phuket.

Fisherman Village at Kamala Beach , Phuket, mostly both village and the small fisherman long tailed boats were damaged from the disaster and they can’t restore boats which are important and necessary for their life and family. Beside fishery, most of them earn their living by taking tourists to visit several islands to do many activities such as fishing ,Snorkeling . This is the first priority that they really need help for recovery.

   
 
 

 

Aims of project:

        1. Helping Tsunami-effected fisherman community at Kamala beach, Phuket by building the new long tailed boats and let them starting their career as soon as possible to earn their family living.
        2. Implementing Rotary “ Service Above Self” to the real life, community.
        3. Promoting Rotary Image to the community, public and media.
        4. Co-operation between Rotarians from several district through out the country and abroad.


Target:

        1. Repairing 5 fisherman wooden long tailed boats.
        2. Building 18 fisherman wooden long tailed boats ( 3 different sizes ranging from 17, 19 and 21 Kong, the longest one is 9 meters ).
        3. Installing engines and accessories for the whole 18 boats.



Timeframe:

        Between 2 January 2005 and 2 May 2005 ( 4 months )



Action Plan:

  1. Project surveying after emergency relief had been done for a few weeks. The committee found that there was no strong sign that the state would pay for the boat building , so they decided to sponsor the whole building unanimously. However, the budget is enough for boat excluding engine.
  2. Set up joint committee between the 6 Rotary clubs, fishermen community, Local government representatives. All fishermen are willing to name the boats as " Rotary1,2,3,…….until 18" and installing a big banner to announce the project at the construction site, Kamala beach.
  3. Hiring a group of specialists to build the boats and teach the fishermen to repair or Even buiding their new boat in the future.
  4. Providing instrument, tools, wood, glue,etc.
  5. Supervising the project by the sub-committee.
